Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin, usually on the legs and ankles. They develop when the blood is not flowing through the veins properly due to leaking valves in the main superficial veins, causing an elevated pressure within the connected veins, which causes the enlargement. Varicose veins often appear during and after pregnancy, and in people who have professions which force them to stand still a lot without walking. Over time, the condition worsens, and the enlarged veins will expand more and more, if left untreated.
The presence of varicose veins can cause symptoms like pain, itching and fatigue of the legs, but they should not only be treated for these reasons, or for cosmetic purposes. Leaving them untreated may in the long run result in ulcers which are difficult to treat and can in turn give rise to other serious complications.
Fortunately, the treatment is relatively simple. It is advisable to treat varicose veins in an early stage, in order to avoid the risk of developing problems and complications. They can sometimes be treated without surgery, but in most cases an operation is needed to ensure a long term effect of their removal. The operations involved are usually done in our Day Surgery Unit (DSU), not requiring an overnight stay at the hospital, except in extensive cases. Your doctor will consult you about the treatment for varicose veins, and explain the options.
