The United Arab Emirates is one of the most liberal and pluralistic of the Gulf countries. It is extremely multi-cultural, with Emirati nationals making up only about 20% of the population. Foreign workers from all over the world make up the other 80%.

The local culture tends toward conservative dress, particularly for women, though non-national women do not need to cover their heads. Both men and women can participate in everyday activities such as driving, banking, shopping, working, etc. The climate is hot in summer, reaching into the range of 115 degrees, but quite pleasant from October through April. Al Ain is typically dry, not humid.

The city of Al Ain is inland from the Gulf, about 160 km (100 miles) from Abu Dhabi and 130 km (80 miles) from Dubai. There are several modern malls for shopping, and easy availability of schools, doctors, and most modern conveniences. International airports are available in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
